Definition of Intellectual Development

In the book "Teach Participants Development", prepared by the Sunarto and Agung Hartono (2002:99) expressed some opinions about intellectual understanding are as follows:
- According to Home & Home in his book "A Comprehensive Dictionary of Psychological and Psichological Terms", the term means that intellect, among others: (1) mental strength where people can think; (2) a family name for the cognitive process, particularly for activities related with thinking (eg connect, measure, and understand), and (3) skills, especially high skills to think; (compare with intelligence. Intelligence = intellect)
- According to Webster's New World Dictionary of the American Language, intellect term means:
1) ability to think, observe or understand; ability to observe the relationships, differences, and so on. Thus the different skills of the will and feeling,
2) a large mental skills, so intelligence, and
3) the mind or intelligence.
- According to Singgih Gunarsa Adolescent Psychology in his book, he proposed several formulas of intelligence as follows:
1) Intelligence is a collection of one's ability allows gain knowledge and practice of science in relation to the environment and the problems that arise.
2) Intelligence is a particular form of behavior that appears in the smooth behavior.
3) Intelligence includes the experiences and skills and increased understanding of behavior with new patterns and use it effectively.
4) William Stern argued that intelligence is an ability to adapt to new demands assisted with the use of thinking functions.
5) Binet believed that intelligence is an ability acquired through descent, and inherited abilities since birth and have too much influenced by the environment. Within certain limits the environment played a role in the formation of intelligence capabilities.
- Wechler defined intelligence as "the overall ability of individuals to think and act as directed and the ability to process and control environment effectively".
Of some opinion, can dikesimpulan that understanding the intellectual development of human-level thinking skills are affected by heredity and environment, so have new experiences that can shape one's mindset.
